Angel Olsen - Rosy Cheeked Beauty & A Voice That Kills

There’s something to be said for rosy cheeked midwestern girls with beautiful voices, and that something is “I want you all to myself”. In spite of this, I feel the need to share Angel Olsen’s music. An extraordinary level of vocal sincerity exists in her vibrato, voice cracking dance with being out of control, as she simultaneously and unfalteringly maintains a Patsy Cline-esque grip on such folk intonations. Her lyrics are rife with issues of love, yet somehow she avoids banality by displaying her own self awareness and sense of agency in the situations each song conveys. When she sings it’s as if she’s beelining it, through corniness on one side and cynicism on the other, to a tranquil home on the range she has built for herself. It’s not that she’s shattered my boyish crush, but anyone who can convincingly sing the lyrics “I am life” probably knows a bit more about life than me, which is intimidating. To my NY people, I strongly recommend seeing her on February 20th at Le Poisson Rouge. I’ll be there. Just look for the guy with roses in his hand, anxiety in his heart, and a book on convincing people to move away from the midwest because unfortunately it will never be a fun place. No. Not even with Chicago on its side.

As the snow falls here on the streets of New York City, so too do the spring 2014 couture collections in Paris. Most notably for me this a.m. was waking up to images of Chanel. The pastel creations paired with sneakers, (tying back to my “Sneaking Away From Heels in 2014,”) were more than inspired. The collection was wearable, romantic, and dreamy, just enough to make one forget the snowfall. Xxx

I'm  dubbing Natalia Kills  the provocative pop princess of 2014. Her song Controversy stopped me in my tracks one sunday in the  East Village whilst digging through vintage gems at Tokyo7. A mixture of racy lyrics, the perfect baseline, and her  low voice seductively saying shocking words demands attention. Upon further research, the star defines girly retro vibe in her style , (think Topshop pink sequin dress and furry bedroom slipper heels) and is a refreshing reminder to push the boundaries from people pleasing conformity to getting a little nasty. xxx Watch her video here

Founder of CATiD Kerrin Smith leaves a trail of glitter and inspired similes in her wake, on a grander mission to inspire the masses to be “Cool and Thoughtful,” through her business CATID. She successfully practices a lifestyle of accountability and thoughtful interaction regarding the fashion world as her custom one of a kind shirt brand grows. Kerrin lives and breathes what she preaches, and I had the most amazing tea at the Jane Hotel with the self proclaimed “Urban gypsy princess”. From her glitter half moon mani, down to the lace biker shorts, she has always lived up to the title, looking eternally chic and inspired. But what is CATiD? Kerrin describes it best on her website sighting, “CATiD is a project committed to causing a shift from passive consumerism to responsible global citizenship. Rooted in core principles of recognizing interdependence, being accountable, and valuing peace, CATiD looks to spark a second shift from fashion as a medium of exclusion to a medium of inclusion”.

The brand is growing at an astonishing pace for a young newcomer but I would expect nothing less from someone so committed to making a fashion change. Huge brand collaborations are in the works for this New York Jolie, and I can’t wait to witness the trail of glitter she leaves behind. The first collection of shirts is two shirts away from being sold out on CATid.net’s boutique (link below), and her next line will start production sometime in January. I was lucky enough to get one of the last pieces from the collection, and will forever cherish the hand written tags, custom designed bag, and Harley embellished tee that carries its own story, all documented in its packaging.
